Pressed Memories – Artropolis, Maple Ridge, and Richmond Art Galleries
Artropolis #3 contained my installation envisioning the House of the Vestal Virgins in the Roman Forum. The pool was made of canvas, and around the edge were names of people who lived radiantly with purpose, like the Vestal Virgins who could pardon criminals just by passing by. In the archways around the pool were various Ironing Board pieces, and standards at the entrance bore the irons.
At Maple Ridge, the body of work began with found wooden ironing boards transformed into marking stones, obelisks, or altar-like pieces, as containers of the lives lived. The form notes the ritualization of many domestic tasks in women’s everyday existence.
At Richmond Art Gallery, I continued my exploration of the Ironing Board concept as the marking stones for the lives women lead.
